Lieutenant (Abbreviated to Lt) is the most common commissioned officer rank. It is one rank above Lieutenant JG and below Lieutenant Commander. Lieutenants can perform almost any officer duty on a starship. In some cases lieutenants can be department heads, especially on smaller starships.
