She was previously commanded by several different Officers, including Commander April Hythe-Edwards, Captain James Logan, Lieutenant Commander Adam Mitchell, and Captain Gregory Ben Tailor (2384-2386). Commander James Whittier took command of the USS Courageous on March 20, 2386.
[edit] USS Courageous History
Abandoned by her former crew after the engines gave out during the Battle of Chin'toka, the USS Courageous drifted in space, a derelict vessel in a field of derelict vessels -- the remains of the bloody Dominion War.
Drifting in space, it wasn't until Stardate 61164.2 that the Courageous was brought back into service under the command of Gregory Ben Tailor. He and his crew’s first task -- restoration. The Courageous was Tailor's first command, and Starfleet felt that the mission of restoring the still structurally sound vessel would be a good opportunity to ease Tailor into the command chair. Little did Starfleet know that their decision to restore the old ship would bring the Courageous crew face to face with the Etaoin Shrdlu!
After drifting for seven years in the barren wasteland surrounding by the broken hulls of untold numbers of warships, the Courageous was a mess. During the first mission the crew pieced the Courageous back together with the help of a civilian freighter and crew, the SS Paragon. It was also during this mission that the crew uncovered the frightful tale of the total annihilation of the Milky Way galaxy -- our own timeline in the year 2438 where all the major powers are destroyed and no civilization remains intact.
The information gathered by the Courageous and her crew was classified top secret. Classifying the information was done by Starfleet Command in hopes of preventing a mass panic among the civilized worlds of the Federation -- or rather to delay the panic long enough to give the Courageous and her crew a chance to take the war to the invaders! Starfleet Command charged the crew to take command in building a top secret base of operation, a temporal outpost, and there to develop weapons, tactics, defenses, and technologies to prevent the Milky Way's destruction.
For two years, the Courageous crew worked tirelessly and oversaw the research and planning of a new temporal outpost. The outpost planning was near completion on Stardate 63197.26, two years after Tailor took command, when news of the Etaoin Shrdlu went public on Hydra IV, a planet in the relatively remote Epsilon Hydra system. As feared, the planet’s inhabitants panicked. Starfleet sent in the Courageous to contain the situation, but the ship was attacked soon after reaching Hydra IV. Suffering major damage from the encounter, the Courageous was forced to crash-land on the planet’s ocean. The crew abandon ship as the once-proud warship sunk to a watery grave deep into the ocean's depth.
