The Security Corps is concerned with the protection of Federation citizens. They are trained to serve on the personnel level. Security personnel wear gold. On many vessels and facilities Security combined with Tactical.

On a starship or starbase their function to to the defend the crew and the ship. The are trainied primarily in defensive and close-quarters combat. They are used to fighting in confined spaces. In addition to defense they serve a police function. They respond to complaints and have the authority to arrest people within their jurisdiction if they feel it is necessary.
