The Security Corps is concerned with the protection of Federation citizens. They are trained to serve on the personnel level. Security personnel wear gold. On many vessels and facilities Security is combined with Tactical.

Starfleet security arose from a service branch of United Earth's Starfleet in 2155. When the United Federation of Planets was formed, Starfleet Security became responsible for other Federation outposts, ships, facilities, and became a local and regional police agency. Security mandates and enforces Starfleet regulations, procedures, and policies on all Starfleet and affiliated ships, stations, bases, and outposts. It creates security clearances for personnel. Starfleet Security cooperates with Starfleet Intelligence for covert intelligence gathering purposes. A branch of Starfleet Security protects the President of the United Federation of Planets and the Council at the Palais de Concorde. The Chief of Starfleet Security is held by a flag officer of the rank of Admiral.
[edit] Starships/Mobile Operations
On a starship or starbase their function to to the defend the crew and the ship. The are trained primarily in defensive and close-quarters combat. They are used to fighting in confined spaces. In addition to defense they serve a police function. They respond to complaints and have the authority to arrest people within their jurisdiction if they feel it is necessary.
[edit] Starbases/Outposts/Stationary Operations
Starbase security officers operate similarly to their mobile counterparts on a starship. The size of the base determines if the security forces need to view their assignment as the police department of a large urban area. For example, a Stardock class starbase has hundreds of decks and tens of thousands of people, necessitating a major security force. They spend their time patrolling the station, solving crimes both large and small, inspecting incoming and outgoing vessels and cargo, and assisting the security department of Starfleet ships currently docked.
