Editing a Wiki page is not difficult. With a few commands, you can post your own articles on the Obsidian Fleet Database.

Here we have a guide to the commonly used commands. For more commands, please visit "how to edit a page" on Wikipedia.

Contents

[edit] Editing an Existing Page / Creating a New Page

• You must be logged in to edit or add pages
• To edit an existing page, simply clink the "Edit this page" link on the top of the page.
• To create a new page, create a link in an existing page or use an existing link with no attached article. This will bring you to the edit page.

[edit] Linking Articles

Linking articles is possibly the most important aspect of a Wiki database.

[edit] Linking to within the Wiki

• You can link to an article by using surrounding the link in . For example Klingon appears as Klingon.
• It is okay to link to non-existing articles which you would like to see developed. It will show the desire for the articles and save time when the articles are created.
• Article titles should be sigular to avoid confusion. See naming conventions While writing the plural form, you can link to an article by surrounding only part of the word. For example: Klingons appears as Klingons.
• Sometimes, what you are writing in the article is different than what you want displayed and you cannot surround the partial word. In these cases, you can seperate your link name and your displayed text with the | character. For example: The Aqua would appear as The Aqua

[edit] Linking to outside of the Wiki

• HTML style links are surrounded by [ ] in wiki and must include the "http://". To display different text that the URL, seperate the link from the displayed text with a space. For example: Obsidian Fleet's Official Site appears as Obsidian Fleet's Official Site.

[edit] Formating

• There are three levels of headings you can use. ==Heading== , ===Sub-heading=== and ==== Sun-sub-heading====. Using more than four headings will automaticly create a Table of Contents at the top of the page.
• You can hilight text using italics, bold or bold-italic. italics, bold and bold-italic.
• You can use small text for footnote type comments by using the <small>small text tags</small>
• You can also strikout or underline using the <s>strikeout</s> and <u>underline</u> tages.
• <!-- You can add hidden text for comments by using the comments tag -->
• To start a new line, you must have a blank line.
• To create a bullet list, start the line with a *
• Inbedded lists start with **
• and sometimes even ***
• To create a numbered list, start the line with #
1. Imbedded numbered lists are done the same way as bullet lists ## and ###
• Imbedded lists can mix bullets and numbers by using combinations such as *#* and *##
• To sign and date an addition to a discussion page, type ~~~~. This will appear as Ghraf 06:53, 28 August 2005 (EDT)

[edit] Naming Conventions

In order to avoid confusion when creating links between articles, we ask that you follow our naming conventions.

• Articles names should be singular:
• Klingon not Klingons
• Everything except names and titles should be lower cased:
• Personal equipment not Personal Equipment
• Task Force 21 not Task force 21
• Links to player characters should be just their name (Last name, First name) and not include their rank:
• Smith, John not Ensign John Smith
• This will make things much easier when you get a promotion.
• Articles should have the full name and not an abbreviation:
• Task Force 21 not TF21
• Judge Advocate General not JAG
• For commonly used abbreviations, a redirect can be used.
• Links to a starship class should be the class name and the word 'class':
• Defiant class not Defiant
• This will make thing easier when linking to things such as a nebula or galaxy
• Planets with a number in the name should use roman numberals:
• Argus III not Argus 3 or Argus Three
• Mission Summaries should have the ship name and the mission title:
• USS Bob: Through the looking glass not Through the looking glass
• This will prevent confusion is two ships ever use the same mission title
• For further ideas for Naming Conventions, visit Naming conventions.

[edit] Categorizing your submission

• All articles should be listed in a category. The list of database categories can be found here. To list your article in a category, use the tag at the end of your article.
• An article may belong to more than once category.
