The Starfleet Marine Corps (SFMC) is the modern descendent of the naval infantry of the 20th and 21st century. The SFMC is modelled on the British Royal Marines and United States Marine Corps, borrowing elements from both services as well as other marine, naval infantry and army infantry forces from many Federation member planets.
The primary role of the Marines within the fleet is to maintain a well armed offensive & defensive force for rapid deployment anywhere within Federation and outlying space. Marines serve on board starships and bases, assisting the crew in battles, boarding enemy ships, conducting plaentary actions as well as protect ports and naval bases. They also serve as a landing force; securing an area for transporter or shuttle landing. Unlike security Marines do not walk a patrol, investigate crime or administer the brig and, unlike tactical, Marines do not operate the ship's weaponry.
As a result of their mixed land and space role, Marine forces are mainly specialised in amphibious (figuratively 'of two worlds') assaults using infantry, armour, air/spacecraft, and watercraft. They train for many combat scenarios including hostage recovery, rescue of federation citizens caught in the midst of civil war as well as full ground based combat. By 20th Century standards the average SFMC Rifleman is the equivalent of a United States Naval SEAL or a Royal Marine Commando of Great Britian. However, covert intelligent or "black operations" missions are forbidden and no such units exists despite their occurance in popular entertainment.
[edit] Ninth Marine Division
The Ninth Marine Division was assigned to the Obsidian Fleet in 2376. It consists of four Marine Expeditionary Forces comprised of light infantry with heavy (mechanized) infantry and aerospace support. The Headquarters and Service Battalion is stationed at Obsidian Colony under the command of Major General Darnell Rawls while day-to-day operations are overseen by the S1, Colonel Anna Wright. All enquires should be addressed to Col. Wright.

The following are Marine positions, divided into both infantry and aerospace, as well as the Marine occupations. Marines can hold a combination of the two. For example, a the position of Marine Wing Commander also has the occupation of Marine Pilot.
